On May 26, 2010 the National Consumers League released a report on unsanitary wood and plastic pallets in the food supply chain. They tested wood pallets behind food distribution warehouses and grocery stores and found 10% were positive for E coli bacteria and 2.9% positive with Listeria. The NCL video is posted below. The press release and links to the test results are found at this link (Source: National Consumers League).
This report has already gained national media coverage and the attention of the Food and Drug Administration. The CBS Early Show ®, covered the story May 27, 2010. A link to the story and video is here (Source: CBS Early Show).

When users properly disinfect their stainless steel pallets, they maximize their protection from possible contamination in an important clean environment.
Our stainless steel pallets are available with all sealed welds to eliminate nearly all harbors for bacteria or contamination.
In addition we construct stainless
steel pallets with robotic as well as human welds and use zero rivets, clamps or fasteners. Unlike wood pallets, stainless steel pallets are ISPM-15 compliant, will never become infested by pests, nor will ever rot.
Not all stainless steel pallets have the same performance characteristics. Depending upon their specific use, we custom fabricate stainless steel pallets from particular alloys to offer a high level of corrosion resistance. Stainless steel pallets made of lower alloyed grades are corrosion-resistant in harsh
water and atmospheric situations. Stainless steel pallets made of high-alloyed grades resist corrosion in alkaline environments, when exposed to chlorine, and in the presence of most acids. Moreover, stainless steel pallets are rust-resistant through the entire thickness of
the material, not just on the surface like with hot-dipped galvanized steel pallets.
For high temperature applications, stainless steel pallets are constructed from very special high chromium and nickel-alloyed grades to resist scaling and maintain strength at very
high temperatures. Other stainless steel alloys are suited well to build pallets for extremely cold environments, especially in the frozen food industry and in scientific laboratories.
Inherently, stainless steel pallets are fireproof and can contribute to lower insurance
rates, unlike the serious fire hazard and increased insurance costs associated with nearly all wood and plastic pallets.
High technology steel fabricating technology such as laser cutting and modern metal forming equipment enable the accurate manufacture of stainless
steel pallets in a wide variety of configurations for different types of applications including lightweight, heavy duty, automated and manual uses.
Stainless steel pallets can be produced in both metric and standard measurement and can be precision-built for use
in Automated Retrieval Systems (ARS). Stainless steel pallets are also available in both 2 and 4 way entry configurations, and can be made to rack under heavy weight or be nestable for easy storage.
Our stainless steel pallets are always custom-designed for both size and
load capacity.
Most important of all stainless steel pallets offer superior return-on-investment over their life cycle and meet corporate sustainability objectives. Stainless steel pallets meet sustainability goals because stainless steel pallets are 100% recyclable
and are nearly always constructed of 30-40% recycled material!
Because of their performance and high scrap value, stainless steel pallets are the least expensive material option compared to pallets made of other materials especially when used in specialty
applications.
